Abortion: The Changing Debate
Pre-Conference Event | Friday, October 24
On the Friday evening before our Saturday conference, First OPC will co-host a pre-conference teen event alongside Live Oak Academy. Last year, we tackled the important topic of human sexuality. This year, we will look at the ethical question of abortion, in a series of talks we’ve entitled Abortion: The Changing Debate.
Dr. Mark Jones will tackle this important and controversial topic from a Biblical and theological perspective, and we will also hear from Esther Holst, the department head of Christian Christian studies at Live Oak Academy in Santa Clara, CA.
All are welcome to join us for Friday and/or Saturday! Just use the registration link below to register for one, or both, of these events.
Speakers
Dr. Mark Jones
Rev. Dr. Mark Jones has served as minister of Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Vancouver, Canada since 2007. He is the author of several books written for the church, including Knowing Christ, God Is, and Faith. Hope. Love., as well as works on the Puritans. His interest in the Puritans led him to complete a doctoral dissertation on the theology of Thomas Goodwin, whose influence continues to shape his preaching and teaching today. In addition to his pastoral ministry, Mark has taught theology in various settings around the world.
Mark and his wife, Barb, have four children. In his spare time, Mark coaches several soccer teams at Surrey United Soccer club.
Esther Holst has taught for many years at Live Oak Academy, and she is the head of the academy’s Christian Studies department. Before teaching, she had a career in the technology industry. Panel Discussion

Reservations help us plan the event and be prepared for those who come, so we appreciate the advance notice! However, everyone is welcome, with or without tickets. A ticket will not be required for entry.
-
We welcome parents to attend with their teens to be better informed and equipped to address the cultural messages bombarding our children. We also welcome youth groups from churches or schools who are accompanied by a youth leader. Finally, we welcome teens who wish to attend on their own, with parent approval. We hope that the event will spur helpful discussions within families and among youth.

While the speakers will not be including explicit or disturbing discussion in their presentations, we will be speaking forthrightly about the difficult subject of abortion. The teenage audience we anticipate will be most interested in and impacted by this event are High School age students. However, by the Middle School years, most children are aware of this subject. Therefore, seventh and eighth grade students are welcome, and children as young as sixth grade may also benefit from the event, depending upon their level of maturity and exposure to cultural messaging.
